All older adults, that is, adults aged 60 and above should strive to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. If already obese, they should make changes to their eating and physical activity behaviors. Wherever possible, older adults should follow the adult (general) physical activity guidelines. When this is not possible, they should be as physically active as their abilities and conditions will allow. For detailed physical activity guidelines for older adults, click here. Those with cardiovascular diseases should make immediate changes. Intentional weight loss among older adults is very beneficial and their effect is immediate. Improved quality of life and reduced risk of chronic diseases and associated disabilities are the results.

In older adults, moderate alcohol consumption has some beneficial effects like lower risk of cardiovascular disease and keeping intact of cognitive function with age. However, it is not recommended that anyone begin drinking or drink more frequently based on these beneficial effects. This is because alcohol consumption in moderation is also associated with increased risk of cancer, violence, drowning, and injuries from falls and motor vehicle crashes. Proper hydration is necessary in older adults. Heat waves have the potential to result in an increased risk of dehydration, especially in older adults.

As people grow older, almost all systems of the body get affected. Severe physiological, metabolic, and psychological changes occur. They tend to become less active and therefore need fewer calories to maintain their weight. The daily calorie intake, therefore, should be less but with adequate nutrients. Food intake should be in match with the physical activity. Avoidance of fried, salty and spicy foods is recommended. Food taken in many divided portions in a day is recommended.

If for some reason, you cannot become active on your own
